2022 Buxton Homecoming

September 2, 2022 - September 5, 2022

Organizers of the annual Buxton Homecoming Celebration are delighted to announce that they are making plans for an in-person event in 2022. The 99th Annual Buxton Homecoming Weekend will run from September 2-5, 2022. All activities take place on the grounds of the historic Buxton settlement, Canada’s largest and most successful black settlement. Inspiration for the planning committee this year are select lyrics from “Reunited and It Feels so Good” the R and B hit by Peaches and Herb, released in 1978.
The Covid pandemic meant that the 2020 Homecoming was an online event only. By 2021, circumstances allowed for some limited in-person events. But in 2022, the organizing team is planning for a full 4-day weekend that offers a blend of African Canadian heritage, family reunions, children’s activities and the best of small-town hospitality.
The planning committee is eagerly looking forward to welcoming everyone back to the Buxton Homecoming Celebration. Through their planning sessions, they quickly learned that the cost to stage an event has risen significantly since 2019. (fencing, tables, chairs, tents, insurance, supplies, port-a-Johns are examples of the items that have risen in costs). While the additional costs may impact some elements of the event this year, the planning committee is confident that in spite of these adjustments, everyone who attends will appreciate reconnecting with family, friends and neighbours. This is heart of the Buxton Homecoming Celebration and this year’s event will not disappoint. “Reunited and It Feels so Good”.
The weekend program will include:
Friday, September 2, 2022 – Annual History and Genealogy Conference – Hybrid Model in Person & Virtual
