Cultivating Conservation Tour

The LTVCA is putting on an event on Thursday, September 8th called the Cultivating Conservation Tour.
The Cultivating Conservation Tour is self-directed tour, where the general public is invited to see examples of completed or ongoing local conservation projects; including wetlands, tallgrass prairies, tree planting, species at risk, and agricultural sites. The event targets both rural and urban landowners in Chatham-Kent. The self-directed tour will be held from 2pm-5pm, on Thursday September 8th. The tour will conclude with a social gathering, meal and a guest speaker at the Red Barn Brewery Company from 5:30-8:00pm
The guest speaker will be Rob Keen from Forests Ontario.

About this event
How the Cultivation Conservation Tour came to be:.
The goal of this interactive tour is to increase awareness regarding regional environmental issues and to provide examples of solutions that can and have been implemented by local residents. The event targets both rural and urban landowners in Chatham-Kent. The self-directed tour will be held from 2pm-5pm. The tour will conclude with a social gathering, meal and a guest speaker at the Red Barn Brewery Company from 5:30-8:00pm. This event will be rain or shine, with the exception of thunderstorms in which case it will be cancelled.
Tour sites and their conservation projects:
Myslik CA: 10612 Welch Line, Blenheim, ON
This 100-acre property has been restored with 3 wetland cells, tall grass prairie and planted with over 18,000 Carolinian trees. Managed as a nature reserve, this site is generally not open to the public. This former pasture land is already producing great results and is a fine example of large-scale land restoration.
Steve Myslik: Stefina Line, Blenheim, ON
Steve has worked with us on the home farm site to restore 5 wetland cells, the most recent in 2018. We have planted 4800 tree seedlings this past Spring 2022. This site is an ideal example of how landowners are to take on the maintenance of a tree project.
Mike Buis: 8373 Middle Line
This project assisted with the installation of 2400 meters of exclusion fencing to maintain livestock herds on 60 acres while securing healthy water quality passing through the property. This is a great example of modernizing livestock management with public health and species at risk in mind.
The Thames River has a diverse amount of muscle species, making it one of the leaders. Our Species at Risk team will be there to showcase some of these muscles and will be able to answer questions about aquatic life.
Mike & Barb Ferren:10346 Brush Line, Blenheim, ON
With two ponds, tallgrass prairies and shady sycamores, this property is the site for many family gatherings and getaways. Sitting on 37 acres, the ponds have become a popular site for ducks, turtles and muskrats alike. Although the second pond cannot be easily reached this time of year, the deer tracks let us know it’s being enjoyed!
Sons of Kent Brewing Company: 27 Adelaide St S, Chatham, ON
The LTVCA has partnered with Sons of Kent (SOK) Brewing company to restore the bank of the McGregor Creek behind the building. The creek bank is currently overrun with invasive species and has significant amounts of litter. Come and see the bank restoration in progress! This is a great example of urban stewardship and will showcase what the Imagine McGregor program is all about!
